Cape Town – Five dangerous prisoners awaiting trial reportedly escaped from the police holding cells at Zeerust police station, North West on Sunday.
In a statement, police said Joshua Sibanda, 39, Amogelang Motsiane, 36, Tshepiso Kwenampe, 22, Bengu Hlanganane, 31, and Enoch Lebeloane, 46, overpowered a police officer at the station, took the cells key and escaped.
“At the time of escape, the detainees were among others, facing charges of house robbery, rape, attempted murder, business robbery and aggravated robbery,” said the police.

A manhunt for the five prison escapees has since been launched by the North West police in Zeerust.
Police urged the public to call the nearest police station if they see the escapees.
“None of the escapees has been re-arrested and members of the community are urged not to attempt to re-arrest the escapees in case they see them, but to call the nearest police station, as they (escapees) are presumed to be dangerous,” said the police.
