Cape Town – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have reportedly launched an investigation following the death of a 29-year-old woman cruise member on the MSC Orchestra cruise ship in Durban on Thursday night last week.
According to IOL, police said that the woman, who was believed to be from the Eastern Cape, was working on the cruise ship and was on duty when she was found dead.
“The police on Maydon Wharf have registered an inquest docket and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death,” the report quoted National police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda as saying.
Meanwhile, MSC Cruises SA said that the woman’s death was believed to be of an “accidental nature”, reported Times Live.

“The death, which we believe to have been of an accidental nature, as is usual under such circumstances, is being investigated by the local authorities and we will continue to provide every assistance,” the report quoted Lebo Mavuso, spokesperson for MSC Cruises SA as saying.
A website run by ex-crew members, Crew Center, said that the crew aboard the cruise ship were left devastated by the death of one of their colleagues.
“There was a medical emergency announcement on the ship’s PA system and the medical staff rushed to help the crew member. Unfortunately, they couldn’t save the crew member,” said the Crew Center.
MSC Orchestra resumed cruises to South Africa in January after pausing operations for a month. The ship operates from Durban and offers 3 and 4-night voyages.
