Cape Town – North West police are investigating after two men allegedly burned to death while two more sustained burn wounds after they were allegedly “set alight” near an abandoned building in Potchefstroom over the weekend.
The two men were declared dead at the scene while the other two were treated and taken to the local hospital for further treatment, ER24 said in a statement.
ER24 was alerted to the incident after a man was brought to the Ikageng police station at about 05:00 on Sunday.
Medics who assessed the man found that he sustained burn wounds over most of his body, said ER24.
“The man was treated and provided with advanced life support before he was transported to a nearby hospital for further care,” the statement said.
The same morning, ER24 medics were called to an abandoned building in the Potchefstroom Industrial area where another victim was found with burn wounds far from the building, he was treated and transported to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

“Local security members later inspected the building and found two bodies inside. Unfortunately, both patients had already succumbed to their numerous burn injuries. Nothing could be done, and they were declared dead by the Mooirivier Beskerming First Responders. The exact details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” read the statement.
According to North West police spokesperson, Captain Aafje Botma, the victims were allegedly living at the abandoned building, reported IOL.
“An inquest is being investigated after the bodies of two men were discovered at a small room at an abandoned building in the industrial area in Potchefstroom on Sunday morning. The men were allegedly living there. A third man was also injured and reported it to a security guard,” the report quoted Botma as saying.
Botma said the cause of the fire was being investigated, the report said.
