Cape Town – A case of attempted murder has been opened after a Fort Hare University member of staff was found bound and gagged in his flat in Alice.
In a statement, police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana suspicions only arose after colleagues noticed he had not turned up for work.
“They then went to investigate in his flat, where they eventually found him. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical care after they noticed that he was not well,” Kinana said.

He said that circumstances surrounding the incident were currently under investigation.
No injuries were reported, he said.
“A case of attempted murder has been registered for investigation. No arrest made at this stage. It must be noted that the SAPS does not relate or associate this incident with previous incidents which were reported and associated with Fort Hare University employees,” Kinana said.
The incident came just weeks after the Unversity’s vice-chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu’s bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele, was murdered.
News24 reported that the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, labelled the incident as “a pattern of assassinations and threats on staff at the university”.
