Cape Town —Police have confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody following the disappearance of Sodwana Bay skipper, John Matambu, who went missing this week.
Matambu mystersiouly disappered while out on a charter with a mystery man. The following day, Matambu’s 21-foot Yeld Cat ski-boat, MAGNUM TOO, was found burnt and wrecked on a beach near Mozambique.
The case, which has garnered the attention of Interpol, was blown wide opne when Matambu’s nephew, Mike Eilertsen, confirmed that the orignal person of interest was arrested on Friday night, The Citizen said.
Eilertsen revealed that a man was apprehended in Maputo on Friday evening and is currently in police custody.
Matambu met a man at a local bar in Sodwana Bay on Friday 15 March, who told him he was terminally ill and his last wish was to was to go out on the sea with a boat. Matambu took the man to Island Rock Beach and the two were set to return on Saturday, but all that was found was the burnt boat.
According to IOL, family spokesperson Candice Eilertsen clarified that the surname of her uncle by marriage is actually Dercksen.
“John Dercksen was renamed John Matambu by the Zulu people of Sodwana Bay, who love him dearly. ‘Matambu’ means bones … rope … tall and thin … and to respect his friends, our John took the name Matambu.”
She encouraged the public not to spread anhy fake news after they were told that Matambu and his passenger had been found on Wednesday.
Eilertsen said while the search has not been successful thus far, there was “huge momentum” building.
