Cape Town – Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has assigned a task team from his office to investigate a case in which a gunman only known as “John Wick” is alleged to be linked to a series of murders in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
This comes after the assassination of an alleged “Boko Haram” gang leader Phillip Given Mnguni on Tuesday last week.
Mnguni, 35, died in a hail of bullets on the N4 highway near Diamond Hill Toll Plaza.
In a statement, police said a woman identified as his girlfriend was also injured in the shooting.
“Preliminary investigations on the scene identified the deceased as 35-year-old Phillip Given Mnguni. The task team established to investigate gang activities in Mamelodi had already linked him to several cases linked to the Boko Haram.

“All crime scene investigation team members as well as the investigating team tasked with investigating gang-related murders attended the crime scene to ensure that evidence was collected correctly.
“The police are on the lookout for the silver Mercedes Benz that was allegedly used by the shooters,” the statement read.
Reports indicated last week that Mnguni allegedly went into hiding after the murders of two of his fellow gang members at the popular Santorini Pub in Mamelodi West in August.
Mamelodi Community Policing Forum leader Eddie Mnguni told SABC News that the deceased had been terrorising the community for a long time.
“It’s a relief and excitement to some of the people who have suffered under this organisation,” the report quoted Mnguni as saying.
