Cape Town – A hijacked man managed to escape after suspects crashed his VW Polo while fleeing from police in Mahambahlala, Eastern Cape.
The man had been hijacked and shoved into the boot of his vehicle, police said.
While patrolling in Mahambahlala, police officers noticed a suspicious vehicle driving through side streets.
“In Seyisi Street, officers wanted to stop the vehicle but when the occupants saw the police, they sped off,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

The driver of the Polo lost control of the vehicle as it neared a traffic circle on Mavuso Street, causing it to crash into a wall, Janse Van Rensburg said.
The suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire on the police.
“Officers arrested one suspect with a firearm in his possession as well as the driver who was stuck in the crashed vehicle,” Janse van Rensburg said.
She said that as the police officers were working at the scene, they heard sounds coming from the trunk.
“Upon further investigation, an unknown man crawled his way from the boot through the back seats and informed the members that he was hijacked,” said Janse van Rensburg.
The suspects were charged with hijacking, kidnapping, and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
They are set to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court.
