Cape Town — Two learners from Plumstead High School in Cape Town have been suspended after they were photographed with weapons and alcohol while dressed in school uniform.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed that an investigation is underway after the pictures started circulating on social media showing the boys carrying knives, a gun and alcohol. The picture has since been labelled as “Scumstead”, IOL reported.
The images were taken in a lane near the school and, after the school submitted a letter to the parents, an investigation into the pictures began. The matter is being dealt with regarding the WCED code of conduct, spokesperson Millicent Merton said.
“I can confirm that an investigation is underway. The school is dealing with the matter regarding its code of conduct. The school has met the parents of the learners concerned individually. The learners have been suspended as a precautionary measure pending a disciplinary hearing,” Merton said.
Once the suspension was announced, many disgruntled people took to Facebook and shared their comments on the decision and the scandal.
“They should be expelled and charged with the fire arms & weapons laws! That’s probably also not the first time they did this!,” Janet Van Zyl said.
“That’s the culture today. Guns and knives to school. These ones bragging about it on social media. Stupid really,” Lawrence Wardle commented.
“Suspended? Should be expelled and arrested,” Jovanne Sherry said.
Plumstead High School is the third Cape Town school in the past month to be hit by a scandal after two separate racial incidents at Pinelands High School and Table Bay High School.
A video showed a group of students performing a ‘slave auction’ at Pinelands with black students being bid for while behind gates, and they were subsequently suspended while a substitute teacher at Table View used the k-word during a Grade 12 history lesson.
A number of Pinelands High School pupils have been suspended for alleged racist bullying. This was after black pupils were cast in the role of slaves, while their coloured classmates pretended to auction them off.
