Cape Town – Playtime ended in tragedy when two boys died after drowning while swimming with their friends at a dam in Limpopo over the weekend.
The two boys aged nine and 12 died when their makeshift foam flotation devices capsized in the middle of the river, police said in a statement.
According to Lieutenant Malesela Ledwaba both boys Kotsema Ramaru and Kubu Mashilo were from Seshego Zone 5.
“The information at our disposal is that the boys were swimming and crossing the dam using white foam props as flotation devices; an occurrence which is said to be a usual practice in the area. The unfortunate situation happened when their ‘boat’ capsized in the middle of the dam and both boys drowned,” said Ledwaba.

Ledwaba said the body of the one boy was found on Saturday by police divers and the search was set to resume on Sunday for the second boy’s body.
He warned parents to keep a close eye on their children and urged them to ensure children were supervised when engaging in swimming activities.
“Parents are cautioned to ensure that their children do not engage in swimming activities unsupervised and must be wary of this dam as several drowning incidents were reported in the area in the past,” said Ledwaba.
