Cape Town – A truck driver died on Monday when he was crushed by a shipping container in a horrific accident on the M7/Hans Dettman highway in Moseley Park, Durban.

The driver allegedly lost control of the truck while driving downhill on a wet strip of road on the M7 on Monday, said Netcare911 in a statement.

It was alleged that the driver lost control, resulting in the truck jack-knifing, causing the container to shift.

“The reefer container on the trailer load shifted, resulting in the container crushing the driver in the process. Medics arrived on the scene and found an adult male stuck in the front cab, he was assessed, however showed no signs of life and was sadly declared deceased on the scene,” the statement read. 

Rescue crews had to use the Jaws-of-life to free the driver from the wreckage.

The tragic accident marked the third fatal truck accident this week.

Over the weekend, an accident involving a truck on the N2 highway near Pongola claimed the lives of 21 people, including 19 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years.

On Tuesday, a second fiery truck crash on the R34 near Ulundi killed at least one person after the truck had brake failure which led to the multi-truck accident.
