Cape Town – Several roads had to be closed after a bridge collapsed on Hendrik Potgieter Road in Johannesburg following heavy rains that hit Gauteng since last week.
Gauteng department of roads and transport has since closed off the section of the road as a safety measure while they assess the damage.
Motorists were advised to use alternative routes in a warning issued by the department on Tuesday.
“The closure is expected to be in effect for the foreseeable future as investigations are currently under way,” the department said.
MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela together with contractors and engineers visited the site to assess the damage caused, the department said in a statement.
[UPDATE]: Hendrick Potgieter has caved in. It had been closed off so no motorist was endangered.

They provided a preliminary update on the extent of the damage and remedial actions to be undertaken, the report said.
According to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers, Albertina Sisulu Road between Westlake Road and Fourth Road in Florida was also closed to traffic as a precautionary measure following the recent floods, reported News24.
“JRA teams are attending to the matter and will reopen the road as soon as it is safe for road users. In the meantime, motorists are advised to use alternative routes,” the report quoted Peters-Scheepers as saying.
Other road closures included the Ndaba Street bridge at Mapetla Park in Protea South and the Phakoe Street bridge in Naledi.
