Cape Town – A pit bull was left seriously injured after it was assaulted with spades and sticks when it attacked a German Shepherd and Staffordshire Terrier at their home on Krantzwood Close in Trenance in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Tuesday.
In a statement, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said that two pit bulls escaped from their home while their owner was driving into the property.
They entered into a nearby house while the family opened their driveway gate to welcome a visitor.
The pit bulls attacked a Staffordshire Terrier and a German Shepherd cross.
In an attempt to stop the attack, residents doused the dogs with water before beating the male pit bull with spades, sticks, and flower pots.
“Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to the property at approximately 16:44 after receiving multiple calls for assistance from residents in the area reporting the attack in progress.

“On arrival, Reaction Officers heard women and children screaming for assistance. Officers entered the yard and found two pit bulls attacking a German Shepherd.
“Several residents were attempting to separate the dogs without success. Reaction Officers detonated a fire extinguisher which neutralised the situation. One of the pit bulls fled the property and returned to its owner,” Rusa said.
The German Shepherd was said to have suffered serious injuries, while the second dog managed to escape serious injuries.
One of the pit bulls was also hurt. The owners took their dogs to veterinary clinics.
“The owner of the German Shepherd informed Reaction Officers that she intends on registering a criminal case against the owner of the pit bulls after her dogs receive medical attention,” said Rusa.
