Cape Town — A hitchhiker turned the tables on three alleged robbers after fatally shooting one and injuring the other two during an attempted robbery near Suikerbosrand along the R550 in Gauteng on Friday, 11 April 2025.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the incident unfolded after the victim accepted a lift from three individuals travelling in a red VW Polo on the N3 in Vosloorus.
“Along the road, the driver took a different direction and the other suspects pulled out knives and demanded money from the victim. They searched him and took out his purse, which had some cash.

“He then pulled out his licensed firearm, fatally shooting one suspect, and seriously injured the other two,” Nevhuhulwi said.
Police from Zonkizizwe arrived on the scene and arrested the surviving suspects, aged 32 and 43, who are currently under police guard in hospital.
The third suspect, aged 42, was declared dead at the scene.
A case of armed robbery and an inquest docket have been opened for further investigation.
