Cape Town – Msunduzi Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has launched an investigation after disturbing pictures of employees sleeping and sitting on graves went viral on social media.
In the images, some of the alleged employees can be seen comfortably sleeping and sitting on the tombstones.
Although it is unclear where the pictures were taken, it is alleged that the employees are the municipality’s park cleaners responsible for cleaning of parks in public spaces.
The municipality condemned the “unacceptable behaviour” in a statement released on Monday.
It confirmed that processes are in place for the implicated employees to be charged with misconduct and putting the municipality into disrepute.
“People hold graveyards and tombstones in very high regard as spiritual places where they honour loved ones’ memories. The City Manager has ordered an investigation to be conducted as soon as possible.” said the municipality.
Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civic chairperson, Anthony Waldhausen said the association was dismayed at the gross disrespect by the employees, saying, however, that their actions were not uncommon, reported The Witness.
He alleged that there was no supervision of municipal staff and claimed they can do as they please with no consequences, the report said.
