Cape Town – Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD)’s undercover Reaction Unit arrested a Congolese 47-year-old man on Thursday after he was found in possession of counterfeit money in the area of Berea, Johannesburg.
JMPD officers received information about a man peddling counterfeit cash in that area on Tuesday, said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla in a statement.
“Officers proceeded to the given address and requested the caretaker of the building to accompany them to the unit where the alleged suspect resides,” said Fihla.
He said the suspect attempted to hide a plastic bag he had in his possession when the officers introduced themselves.
“Due to his suspicious behaviour, officers forcefully entered the unit and searched the suspect. While searching, officers discovered that the plastic bag which the suspect was holding, had counterfeit money which amounted to R63 000,” he said.
The suspect, a Congolese national was arrested and detained at Hillbrow SAPS, Fihla said.
