Cape Town – Two Cameroonian nationals, Jude Yaya Oka and Evans Akor Tiku, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, on charges of manufacturing counterfeit South African and United States currency.
The arrests followed a joint operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, the SAPS K9 unit, and representatives from the South African Reserve Bank.

“The Pretoria based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in collaboration with the SAPS K9 unit as well as the South African Reserve Bank representatives operationalised information received from Counter & Security Intelligence, Crime Intelligence.
“The team descended at the premises in Silver Lakes Pretoria, along Ferreira Street, Fountains Residential Estates.
“A self-storage unit was subjected to a search. This was after the two suspects were interviewed. Inside the storage were black plastic bags that the accused were busy loading into a nearby parked motor vehicle,” Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.
A printer used to produce the fake currency was also seized.
Oka and Tiku were charged with contravening the Currency Act and violating the Reserve Bank Act.
The court adjourned the case until Tuesday, September 10, 2024, pending a bail application.
