Cape Town – Two men who drowned while reportedly performing a cleansing ceremony in the Mvoti River during heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal were found over the weekend.
The victims, aged 23 and 27, got into difficulty during the ceremony on January 17 and were swept down the river.
Despite initial search efforts being halted due to bad weather, the bodies were eventually recovered on Friday and Saturday.
The search involved teams from IPSS Search & Rescue, Umhlali SAPS K9 Search and Rescue, Durban SAPS K9 Search & Rescue, Badul Air, and KDM Maritime Safety.
IPSS Medical Rescue said that both individuals were retrieved from the river, and their locations were within a distance of less than one kilometre from each other.
“Both deceased are now accounted for. Our condolences go out to their friends and family.”
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall that led to evacuations and road accidents in the province, including the loss of a police constable’s life on the M7 during an accident response.
