Cape Town – At least 60 people were injured when 16 vehicles collided on the N1 north in Pretoria on Saturday night.
The 16 vehicles included an ambulance, bus, truck, taxi and two trailers.
According to a statement by Pro Med Emergency Medical Services, emergency services were attending to a minor accident in the vicinity when the second accident happened.
“Sixteen vehicles were involved in this accident which included a 52-seater bus, a semi-truck, a minibus taxi, an ambulance as well as two trailers. Multiple injuries were reported to the count of around 60 people,” the statement said.
One person who was travelling in the taxi was critically injured and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
“The patient was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed with the use of hydraulic rescue equipment (“jaws of life”) from local fire and rescue services. ROCKET HEMS medical helicopter was activated to assist in transporting this patient to a specialised hospital,” Pro Med Emergency Medical Services said.
Twenty people were transported to nearby hospitals while others were treated at the scene.
The cause of the accident remained unknown.
