Cape Town – The family of Karishma Singh, a Durban mother injured in a fatal multi-vehicle crash on the N2, is pleading for the return of her cellphone, which was allegedly stolen from the accident scene.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the northbound side of the freeway near cement factory NPC on Sunday afternoon after five vehicles collided.
According to East Coast Radio, medics found passengers from two overturned cars ejected onto the carriageway.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that advanced life support teams worked quickly to stabilise the victims.
“Approximately 10 patients had sustained serious to critical injuries. One child, believed to be six years old, had sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital for urgent care,” the report quoted Jamieson as saying.
“However, he went into a state of cardiac arrest and, despite the best efforts of doctors and paramedics, passed away at the hospital.”
A man believed to be in his 50s also suffered multiple severe injuries and went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Despite paramedics’ attempts to resuscitate him, he succumbed to his injuries.
Among the victims was Singh’s six-year-old son, Youvay, who died in the crash. Her cousin, Rakhee Anthoo, has since made a public plea for the return of Singh’s cellphone, saying it contains irreplaceable memories of the child, TimesLIVE reported.
Anthoo revealed that someone is using the phone to post WhatsApp statuses while pretending to be Singh.
“She lost her son, Youvay. A person who was at the scene took her phone. My plea to this person is to have a heart and please contact me privately to return the phone. Her pictures and memories of our baby are on that phone.
“This is such a terrible and traumatic time for our family. Please, whoever you are, I beg you. We will pay you for the phone,” she said.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, and police are investigating.
