Cape Town – Minister of Health Joe Phaahla has announced the appointment of Professor Taole Resetselemang Mokoena as the new Health Ombudsman.
Phaahla described Mokoena as one of the most “outstanding” South African medical scholars, who has transcended the globe to show the quality of South Africa‘s academic prowess.
Mokoena is a retired Head of Surgery from the University of Pretoria.
The role of the Health Ombudsman is to protect and promote the health and safety of users of health services.
Mokoena’s background includes degrees from the University of Natal and the University of Oxford, as well as membership in various professional bodies.
He has previously chaired investigations into surgical deaths and discrimination in healthcare.

The minister expressed confidence in Mokoena’s ability to carry out his duties with diligence and impartiality.
The outgoing Health Ombudsman, Professor Malekgapuru Makgoba, was commended for his work in establishing the office and conducting investigations into healthcare complaints.
Mokoena acknowledged the challenges faced by the healthcare system and expressed his commitment to delivering quality care. He emphasized the importance of listening to the concerns of the public.
