Cape Town – National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has announced that no new bills will be accepted by parliament before next year’s elections.
Currently, there are 36 bills under consideration by the house, and despite extended deadlines, no departments have submitted further submissions.
According to EWN, Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula expressed concern about the impact of a pending constitutional court challenge to the electoral amendment bill, which allows independent candidates to stand in the upcoming national and provincial elections.
“The deadline was the fourth of September and we have been patiently waiting. It is now the 21st of September. So, I don’t expect that there’s further work which will be coming from the side of the executive for consideration by parliament,” the report quoted her as saying.
