Cape Town – The National Assembly will now consider Kholeka Gcaleka’s appointment as the Public Protector on 19 October at Cape Town City Hall.
Initially, this review was planned for September 11th, coinciding with the removal of Busisiwe Mkhwebane from the same position by the National Assembly.
However, the National Assembly Programming Committee determined that holding both votes on the same date would be time-consuming due to the open roll call voting process.
The delay in the session was also due to difficulties in securing a venue for the 400 members of the National Assembly.
Initially, a venue at the Cape Town International Convention Centre was considered for October 18 but was deemed costly.
However, later, the Cape Town City Hall became available for the 19th, which is a more cost-effective option.
The vote was originally planned for September 11 but was postponed to September 21 due to venue issues and committee members travelling for oversight.
The programming committee decided on a roll-call voting system for the nomination, requiring each MP to answer “yes” or “no.”
To nominate a candidate, at least 60% of MPs’ support (240 MPs) is needed, while at least two-thirds support (267 MPs) is required to remove a public protector from office.
Notably, President Cyril Ramaphosa recently removed Busisiwe Mkhwebane from the position of public protector with overwhelming support from the National Assembly, as her term was set to end in mid-October.
