Cape Town – Parliament is set to issue a subpoena to Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, to force him to release the crucial documents in the South African Airways (SAA) deal with Takatso.
This comes after Gordhan failed to provide the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises with documents on the shortlist of bidders and the sale and purchase agreement, SABC News reported.
The Takatso Consortium was chosen as the preferred bidder to take over a 51% stake in SAA, but the deal is still on going as there are conditions that are still outstanding.
Committee chair, Khayalethu Magaxa, says Parliament’s legal services are busy formulating the necessary documents to subpoena the minister to make the documents available.
“The SAA private equity deal needs to be concluded. It needs to be transparent and South Africans know what the deal is. And SAA must focus on expanding its networks and beginning to operate again. Transnet needs an urgent proper turnaround plan with its infrastructure and its operations if we are to turn around our exports and imports,” Brett Herron, of the GOOD Party, said.
The Department of Public Enterprises denies claims that it did not cooperate with the Portfolio Committee in the examination of the transaction deal for SAA.
