Cape Town – International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor is participating in two high-level debates at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York.
The discussions on on Tuesday and Wednesday will primarily revolve around the Middle East situation, including the question of Palestine, and Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
“Under the Presidency of Brazil, the UNSC has convened a high-level open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine,” the department said in a statement.
The UNSC has elevated the Middle East debate to a high-level ministerial meeting due to the ongoing situation in Israel and Palestine.
Pandor will also take part in the WPS debate, which focuses on women’s involvement in international peace and security.
October is recognised as the WPS month by the UN, commemorating the adoption of Resolution 1325 in October 2000, which emphasizes the impact of armed conflict on women and promotes their participation in peace processes.
Pandor will use the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from other countries during her visit to New York.
