The former leader of Operation Dudula, Nhlanhla “Lux” Mohlauhi, has been handed down two suspended sentences – one for housebreaking with intent to steal, and another for malicious damage to property.
The Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court sentenced Mohlauhi, 35, also known as Nhlanhla Dlamini, to two years in jail, suspended for three years, on the housebreaking charge and five years, also suspended for three years, for the malicious damage to property charge.
He was also ordered to pay the owner of the property Victor Ramarafe R9 500 for the damage, according to the Citizen.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed on Thursday that Ramarafe had been compensated “and proof of payment of the amount ordered by the court was presented in open court on August 24”.
TimesLive reports that Mohlauhi was arrested in March 2022 after a complaint that Operation Dudula members had descended on Ramarafe’s house in Dobsonville in search of drugs.
Mjonondwane said the NPA welcomed the sentence and hoped it would “promote respect for the rule of law. We further hope it will deter citizens from being a law unto themselves, but report suspicious activities in their surroundings to law enforcement authorities”.
It was reported in July 2022 that Mohlauhi was no longer a member of Operation Dudula because of friction within the group.
