Cape Town — One person has sustained serious injuries and has been left in a critical condition following a rhino attack in Pietermaritzburg.
According to Midlands Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, Roland Robertson, the team responded to an emergency call after a rhino attack just outside Pietermaritzburg.
“Our advanced life support ambulance was promptly dispatched to the scene for urgent medical assistance. On arrival, we found one person who had sustained serious injuries and was in critical condition,” Robertson said.
He said immediate life support was initiated to stabilise the patient, including the use of specialised rescue equipment and effective care/
“After the patient was stabilised on-site, they were carefully transported by our team to a Level 1 trauma hospital for further treatment and ongoing care,” Robertson added.
According to The Citizen, it remains unclear as to why the rhino attacked the individual and the Kruger National Park said rhinos can be unpredictable and temperamental.
“It is thus of vital importance to keep them safe and healthy, which is done through conservation efforts such as data capturing of populations and treating injured rhinos that have faced the threat of poaching,” it said.
Midlands EMS confirmed that another incident occurred in Howick when an ambulance team and life support paramedics were dispatched to a horse riding incident.
“Upon arrival, it was determined that a child had sustained serious injuries and required urgent advanced life support treatment. The child was stabilized on scene using specialized rescue equipment before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care,” Robertson said.
