Cape Town – An off-duty police officer and his girlfriend were killed in a shooting outside a restaurant on Florida Road, Durban, in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to reports, the officer allegedly went to his girlfriend’s workplace, shot her multiple times, and pursued her into the restaurant where she died.
“It is reported the man, an-off duty police officer, went to his girlfriend’s workplace and the woman went out to meet him. He drew his service pistol and fired shots at her.
“The victim ran back inside the restaurant and the man followed her and continued shooting. She was declared dead at the scene. Two people sustained gunshot injuries during the incident,” Times Live quoted KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda as saying.
Two bystanders were also injured in the shooting.
Metro police officers on patrol witnessed the incident and shot the suspect, who later died in the hospital.
Berea Mail reported that emergency responders from ALS Paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 1:00 AM and found four people shot, including three men and one woman.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the female victim, believed to be in her thirties, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene, the report said.
‘…The alleged suspect was in critical condition, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital where he passed away a short while later. Two other men sustained gunshot wounds to their upper bodies and were transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required,” the report quoted Garreth Jamieson as saying.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation, with police exploring potential domestic-related motives.
