Cape Town – The University of South Africa (UNISA) management plans to challenge the decision of Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to place the university under administration.
Nzimande announced on Friday a 24-month administration period for UNISA, appointing former University of Johannesburg vice-chancellor Professor Ihron Rensburg as its administrator.
The decision came after an earlier court order blocked Nzimande’s attempt to place UNISA under administration in October.
According to EWN, UNISA’s management argues that the decision is insensitive, ill-timed, premature, and in contempt of court, as the legal matter is still pending.
Nzimande’s decision was based on an independent assessor’s recommendation, citing poor financial management and maladministration at the university.
UNISA has taken the matter to court on an urgent basis and has asked students and staff to remain calm and continue their normal activities, the report said.
Rensburg is expected to begin his work as the university’s administrator.
Meanwhile, City Press reported on Sunday that alleged corruption and manipulation of tender processes have left frustrated employees looking for outside help.
“Government and the people of South Africa cannot afford another bout of load shedding – in the form of academic shedding – for the self-enrichment of individuals at the expense of ordinary citizens, the poor and the marginalised. Public resources are stripped without consideration for future generations, who must benefit from a university with 150 years of existence,” the report quoted a letter sent from the staff to the minister.
