Johannesburg — Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, met with the families of the two University of Johannesburg (UJ) students who were shot in Braamfontein last week.
Tragedy struck the institution after three people died in a shooting in Braamfontein. Two men sitting in a parked vehicle were killed, and when a third person was confirmed dead, UJ confirmed it was one of its students, an 18-year-old second-year student. Another student was also shot and is recovering from his injuries in hospital.
According to SA Gov News, Nzimande met with the families and visited the student recovering in hospital. During the briefing, Nzimande discussed the incident and spoke about all issues related to student safety, and also used the opportunity to meet with University leadership to discuss support for the affected families.
The Department of Higher Education showed Nzimande fielding questions from the the media and discussed key issues such as the incident itself, private accommodation and how the government will work to improve student safety across all tertiary education institutions.
