Cape Town – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has reportedly expressed confidence in securing a guilty verdict in the corruption case against former Parliament Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering, related to allegedly receiving R4.5 million in kickbacks from a defense contractor during her tenure as defense minister.
At her second appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday, her legal team requested additional sections of the police docket.
The case has been postponed to July 9 for the serving of an indictment and scheduling her first High Court appearance.

The NPA remains confident in its evidence but acknowledges the final decision rests with the judge, EWN reported.
The NPA also said that Mapisa-Nqakula remains the only person accused in this case after the court said during her last court appearance that she would appear with a co-accused, IOL reported.
NPA spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said that the evidence before them is not sufficient to pursue any other person.
“We had to engage the evidence before us. Remember it was only one charge of money laundering. After further engagement between our investigators and our prosecution team, the ID decided not to pursue the second accused. This is based on the fact that the evidence before us was not sufficient for us to pursue the second accused person,” he said.
