Cape Town — Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, says his department is committed to unveiling the true purpose behind the alleged illegal training camp that was discovered in Modimolle, Limpopo.
A multidisciplinary team raided a training farm in Modimolle where they discovered illegal firearms, ammunition and rifles at the camp, which followed the discovery of another illegal training camp that was found in White River, Mpumalanga, last month.
In a statement, Mchunu commended the team for their excellent work in uncovering the camp and revealed that it was prompted by a tip-off by the Hawks. However, the true nature of the camp is still under investigation.
“While the exact purpose of the training at this facility remains under investigation, the discovery of military-related training equipment and activities raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored,” spokesperson, Kamo Gelo Mogotsi, said.
Mchunu said the safety and security of South African citizens remain of utmost importance and assured the public that the investigation into the matter will continue with the full support of law enforcement agencies.
“The swift and coordinated response by these specialised units showcases the commitment and diligence of our law enforcement agencies in protecting our communities from potential threats. ” Mchunu said.
No arrests have been made yet but police said they will leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of justice.
