The name of South Africa’s Public Protector (PP) could be announced as soon as next week.
After two days of public interviews, the ANC’s Cyril Xaba, chairman of the ad hoc parliamentary committee tasked with finding a new PP, said he was confident the committee could select a nominee from the eight candidates interviewed, EWN reported on Friday.
The candidates to replace suspended Busisiwe Mkhwebane, whose term ends in October, include the deputy PP Kholeka Gcaleka, who has been running the office for the last year.
Mkhwebane has been found guilty of misconduct and incompetence by a section 129 inquiry, which recommended in a report that she be removed from office. The National Assembly still has to vote on her removal, which will require a two-thirds majority, reports News24.
According to IOL, the other candidates for the post are former South Africa Human Rights Commission CEO Tseliso Thipanyane, Pension Funds adjudicator Muvhango Lukhaimane, magistrate Johanna Ledwaba and advocates Oliver Josie, Kwena Thomas Ntsewa, Lynn Marais and Professor Boitumelo Mmusinyane.
Xaba said the committee would meet on Tuesday to choose a nominee. The name would then be forwarded to the National Assembly for a vote on Thursday.
“The way I look at it, there’s just no prospect that the committee will not emerge with a candidate on Tuesday. I promise you we will close the day with a candidate that we will submit to Parliament for approval and submission to the president,” he said.
