Cape Town – A new judge, Ratha Mokgoatlheng, has been appointed to preside over the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, replacing the suspended judge Tshifhiwa Maumela.
The trial had been postponed earlier in July due to Maumela’s illness.
However, President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended Maumela and another judge for reasons unrelated to health – they were accused of failing to deliver judgments promptly.

Judge Maumela had faced criticism for being slow in delivering justice, leading to the recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission to suspend both him and judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi.
A Judicial Conduct Tribunal was established to investigate the complaints against them, as they were accused of not meeting the required time frames for delivering judgments.
