Cape Town – The Nelson Mandela Foundation has announced that its outgoing CEO, Sello Hatang, has been placed on special leave while a legal process is underway regarding his past conduct.
According to Mail & Guardian, the foundation received complaints from staff members about Hatang “in relation to his past conduct” after his resignation earlier this month.
“The board of trustees immediately launched an investigation into this complaint, and Mr. Hatang was placed on special leave to facilitate a thorough legal process which is now underway,” the report quoted a statement signed by foundation chairperson Professor Njabulo Ndebele as saying.
The foundation has appointed Professor Verne Harris as the acting CEO until the process is completed.
Hatang resigned from the organisation on May 1 after 15 years at the helm and had begun serving his three-month notice period when he was placed on special leave, Times Live reported.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation, established in 1999, continues to uphold Mandela’s principles and legacy following his death in 2013. Further details regarding the investigation have not been disclosed at this time.
