Cape Town — The South African Police Services (SAPS) held its annual National Police Day at the SAPS Tshwane Training Academy in Pretoria North, with many employees’ fitness levels being put to the test.
The day took place across three phases, with the first two pahses focusing on fitness and exercise. Fitness is a key requirement for any SAPS officer and members from all levels of the police force were in attendance to show support to their fellow officers as they competed in a 5km, 10km and 15km fun-run.
All SAPS members are encouraged to participate in sport and to institutionalise health and wellness culture in the organisation. Last year, SAPS signed a deal with Virgin Active and Planet Fitness to ensure that members remain physically fit and healthy.

Following the fitness activities, the formal proceedings began. Police Minister, Bheki Cele, delivered the keynote speech. National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, said the welcome address, while Deputy National Commissioner for Human Resource Management, Lt Gen Ntshiea, finished with the vote of thanks.
Masemola paid tribute to all SAPS employees for their dedicated work and sacrifices made to ensure all South Africans feel safe on a daily basis. He said National Police Day offers policemen and policewomen the chance to celebrate one another for their hard work, which Cele echoed in his keynote speech.
“Today we would like to recognise you for all the work you are doing in your various communities and for serving the people of South Africa. We are gathered here so we can celebrate your commitment and your sresolve and for always going beyond the call of duty to ensure all South Africans are safe.” Masemola said.
Ntshiea thanked all the SAOS officers for their attendance at the day’s event and showed their dedication to contributing to protecting society.
“Your attendance made the event a success and assured us that we have your love and support in the fight against crime. Thank you for gracing us with your presence and for contributing to the success of today’s event.” she concluded.
