Cape Town – Suspended public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been removed from her position, becoming the first Public Protector to face such a fate.
The National Assembly on Monday voted with a two-thirds majority in favour of her removal, citing findings of misconduct and incompetence following an arduous impeachment process.
It voted with 318 votes for her removal and 43 against her removal.

Mkhwebane faced four charges related to her conduct during politically charged investigations, including cases involving the South African Reserve Bank, the Vrede dairy farm scam, the South African Revenue Service, and the CR17/Bosasa matter.
Her removal was supported by several political parties, while others opposed it.
Despite the lengthy and costly legal battle, Mkhwebane has indicated her intention to challenge the committee’s report through judicial review, News24 reported.
Her term, which began in 2016, was scheduled to expire in October 2023, potentially qualifying her for a gratuity of approximately R10 million, the report said.
