Cape Town – Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka has been approved as the new Public Protector of South Africa by the National Assembly, receiving 244 votes in favour, meeting the required 60% threshold.
Notably, members of the DA, EFF, UDM, ATM, COPE, and PAC did not participate in the vote, with the UDM, COPE, and PAC being absent.
Gcaleka’s appointment comes after Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane was removed from the position following an impeachment inquiry that found her guilty of misconduct and incompetence.
DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach was kicked out of the National Assembly after insinuating that Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka’s intimate relationship with former Director of Public Prosecutions Menzi Simelane made her get speedy promotions. https://t.co/B0MyvrMZCh

Gcaleka had been acting in the role since June the previous year.
During her time as acting Public Protector, the office cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of wrongdoing in the Phala Phala matter.
President Ramaphosa is now tasked with officially appointing Gcaleka as the Public Protector.
