Cape Town – A 32-year-old man who was on the “most wanted list” of the Mpumalanga police has been arrested for various charges, including housebreaking and stabbing a police officer.
The suspect had been evading capture but was apprehended after a tip-off from a housebreaking victim.
During the arrest, he resisted and threatened the police officers with a knife, resulting in him being shot and sustaining injuries to his foot.
He is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard and faces charges of housebreaking, resisting arrest, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
“Members responded to the tip-off with the intention of executing a warrant of arrest issued against him. As he tried to attack the members with a knife, the men and women in blue reportedly fired some shots and in the process he sustained some injuries on his foot.
“It was during this period when he was finally subjected to an arrest, then was taken to hospital for medical treatment under police guard,” police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli said.
The police anticipate the possibility of adding more charges as the investigation progresses.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will also investigate the shooting during the arrest.
