Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) had its hands full this New Year’s Day, arresting a motorist for driving at 189km/h in a 120km/h zone and six others for speeding.
The JMPD’s High-Speed Unit made the arrests.
The JMPD reportedly also recorded more than 6 000 speeding violations.
News24 reported that JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said all the suspects booked for speeding were released on bail.
“All suspects were detained at the Lenasia South SAPS and released on R1 500 bail.” Fihla reportedly said.

He said that metro police recorded as many as 6 312 speeding cases on New Year’s Day.
“Of these, 2 816 were in Johannesburg (inner city), 771 in Roodepoort and 2 725 were in the Sandton precinct,” Fihla was quoted as saying.
