Cape Town – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says additional arrests related to the prison escape of convicted murderer and rapist, Thabo Bester, are possible.
The spokesperson for the Free State NPA, Phaladi Shuping, said that the trial cannot begin yet as police investigations are still ongoing, SABC reported.
“It’s difficult to tell, we don’t know how long the investigation is going to take. But our hope is that very soon they will finalise the investigation. Remember we cannot pre-empt the challenges that the investigators are going to come across during the process of the investigations.
“But our hope is that very soon, they will finalise the investigation. So that we can determine as to how many people in all are charged and decide on the forum these people will face their trial,” the report quoted Shuping as saying.
Meanwhile, in the Bester case, Thabang Mier, Joel Makhetha, and Moeketsi Ramolula, are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, eNCA.
The former G4S prison officials face charges, including corruption, violation of a body and aiding and abetting.
So far, a total of 12 people have been arrested in connection with Bester’s escape, including G4S employees, Bester’s girlfriend and her father.
Some of the accused have appealed the bail outcome, while others have suspended their bail applications.
