According to eyewitnesses, the security personnel were drawn to the heart-wrenching cries of the infant during their routine patrol along the railway line.
Upon closer inspection, they found a newborn baby girl wrapped in a maize meal bag, left exposed and abandoned.
“Police and paramedics were summoned to the scene where the child was stabilised and referred to the medical facility for further attention,” police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.
The circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the child remain unclear.
“Police calls on anyone who might assist in locating the baby girl’s mother to please contact Detective Constable Tinyiko Khoza on 082 469 1918 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111, alternatively information can be sent via MYSAPS App. All received information will be treated confidentially,” said Mohlala.
Expressing her dismay, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, condemned the act of child neglect, especially as the country prepares to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children.
