Cape Town – A 29-year-old woman in Limpopo has been arrested following the death of her 10-month-old daughter.
The baby’s body was discovered buried in a shallow grave at the woman’s home in Giyani.
The woman, who is a landlady, had left her house to visit her boyfriend after her tenants raised concerns about the disappearance of one of her children.
“According to information, the suspect, who is a landlord at Giyani Section F, left her house to visit her boyfriend on Saturday, 19 August 2023 after her tenants questioned her on the whereabouts of one of her children who suddenly disappeared.

“They became suspicious and on Monday, 21 August 2023, they looked around the yard and noticed a shallow grave. Community members gathered at her house in her absentia and police were notified. They immediately followed the leads and traced the woman.
“She was taken to her house, where she pointed a shallow grave in which she buried her daughter who was allegedly living with disability. It is alleged that she indicated that her daughter died following a sickness, and she buried her alone since she did not have a birth certificate,” police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said.
The child’s body was exhumed and the suspect was arrested on charges of murder and obstructing justice and is set to appear in court.
A post-mortem examination is yet to be conducted to determine the cause of death.
