Cape Town — The body of an American student who was studying at the University of Cape Town (UCT) was found after she was reported missing while hiking on Devil’s Peak.
Brook Cecilia Cheuvront, a 20-year-old student from the University of North Carolina (UNC) was on an internship at UCT. She went hiking on Saturday 21 September. Her body was found at around 2pm on Sunday after a search party was sent out to look for her, IOL reported.
“We can confirm that the body of the missing hiker was found by a search party at about 2pm on Sunday, 22 September 2024, in an area which is part of Devils Peak and retrieved by EMS helicopter,” Western Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said.
According to News24, Pojie said an inquest docket will be opened and an autopsy report will be conducted to determine the possible cause of death.
Brook’s father, Steve Cheuvront, had taken to Facebook calling for his daughter’s safe return after the news broke that she was missing.
“Please, PleasepostsBrook please. Let her be found. It will be daylight there in 90 minutes. Search and rescue. The US ambassador is aware. All resources will be sent. I may be flying over tomorrow,” Steve wrote on Saturday.
However, after receiving the news that Brook’s body was found, Steve requested that all posts asking for Brook’s return, be removed.
“Please take down all posts looking for Brook. She was recovered. We are devastated. God help me and us,” Steve posted on Sunday.
