Cape Town – Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, Chidimma Adetshina’s mother, Anabela Rungo, was detained in Cape Town on Saturday after being found in the country despite having her South African documents confiscated last year over alleged identity fraud.
Rungo was declared ineligible to reside in South Africa in September 2023 but allegedly used a Mozambican passport to return.
“In an apparent act of brazen disregard for the legal consequences of her conduct, it appears that Rungo has defied her ‘undesirable’ status through her Mozambican passport. Investigations are ongoing into further potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct,” home affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza said.

Home Affairs is investigating further possible misrepresentation.
She will be handed over to the Hawks for an ongoing probe.
“After being processed by home affairs over her apparent illegal continued residence in South Africa, Rungo will be handed over to the SA Police Service as she is also the subject of an ongoing investigation by the [Hawks],” Qoza said.
Adetshina’s small child was also found with Rungo, prompting social services and police intervention.
Adetshina’s own citizenship came under scrutiny when she reached the Miss South Africa top ten, leading to allegations against her mother.
She withdrew from the pageant, later competing in Miss Universe Nigeria, where she won and secured the Miss Universe Africa and Oceania title.
