Cape Town — The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has praised the work done by the South African Police Services (SAPS) to arrest a 43-year-old sergeant linked to the death of six people for personal gain.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said an on-duty Sergeant was arrested following allegations that she had fraudulently benefitted from funeral, life and accidental policy covers from various banks and insurance companies, a statement read.
“According to investigations, she (allegedly) started her killing spree in 2019. Her victims were known to her and were from destitute and disadvantaged backgrounds and some were disabled or mentally challenged,” Mathe said.
Mathe said the sergeant would take funeral and life cover out on their behalf and she would be the beneficiary, and she is currently linked to six insurance-related murders and evidence shows she has pocketed at least R10 million.
Police Minister General Fannie Masemola says the involvement “of our own” in such heinous crimes is a disgrace.
“She abused her powers by insuring those that trusted her. This must send a strong warning to all involved that the long arm of the law will find you and catch you,” Masemola said.

In a statement, Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, praised SAPS for the handling of the situation and condemned the officer for the heinous crimes.
“I want to take a moment to commend Captain Mabunda and his team for their tireless and meticulous work in bringing this rogue officer to justice. Their dedication to the rule of law and the protection of our citizens is an embodiment of the integrity we expect from SAPS,” Mchunu said.
He added that the ministry will continue to take a stance against corruption within SAPS and said the arrest serves as a reminder that there is no place for SAPS officers who abuse their power.
“Such actions not only harm innocent lives but also erode the trust that the public places in law enforcement. Let me be unequivocal, we will root out corruption and criminality from within the ranks of SAPS,” he said.
Mchunu added that any police officer found to be involved in crimes will be prosecuted by the law.
