Cape Town – A police officer in Eastern Cape, Warrant Officer Phumzile Nonjingana, has been found guilty of assaulting a woman, Phelisa Makabane, during a confrontation over a parking issue that occurred on December 29, 2017.
According to IOL, Nonjingana, who was driving a marked police vehicle at the time, struck Makabane with an open hand during an argument about her parking.
Makabane reported the assault, and the case was referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) for investigation.
Ipid subsequently forwarded the matter to the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) for a decision on charges, and they also recommended disciplinary action against the officer to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The SAPS issued a final written warning to the officer on June 28, 2021.
Nonjingana, aged 57, was found guilty.
“He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a fine of R12 000 wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence during the period of suspension,” Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu was quoted as saying.
