Cape Town — It has been almost a decade since the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.
Now after many delays, one failed trial and a tussle over the admissibility of confessions, the trial of the five men accused of killing him is expected to get under way again on Friday morning, reports EWN.
The five accused – Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya‚ Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi‚ Mthobisi Prince Ncube‚ Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli – have all pleaded not guilty to murdering Meyiwa.
The trial, presided over by Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, is being heard in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, according to News24.
Meyiwa was shot dead on 26 October 2014 while he was visiting the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s mother.
The first murder trial started in 2020 after the arrest of the five accused, but proceedings had to be restarted last year when the original judge, Tshifhiwa Maumela, fell ill.
The current trial has been delayed for five months for a trial-within-a-trial into the admissibility of confessions of two accused.
Judge Mokgoatlheng, however, ruled on Wednesday that the statements can be admitted as they were made freely and voluntarily.
The State is today expected to call witnesses to put the confessions on record, reports Timeslive.
