Cape Town – Former president Thabo Mbeki has emphasised the African National Congress’s (ANC) responsibility to fulfill promises made to the people, particularly in honor of late struggle veterans.
Speaking at the Heroes Acre in Pietermaritzburg, where he paid tribute to veterans Moses Mabhida and Johnny Makatini, Mbeki stressed the importance of the ANC living up to its commitments, EWN reported.
“We must make sure the movement that they led and sacrificed everything for, as I was saying, they both [Mabhida and Makatini] died in action, we must ensure that the ANC lives up to the promises it makes to the people. It’s an obligation we owe it to them,” the report quoted him as saying.
He highlighted the obligation to address challenges such as service delivery and urged senior party leaders to prioritise the renewal of the ANC, even if they have no personal interest in positions.
During the District Development Model (DDM) Presidential Imbizo held in Kuruman, Northern Cape, on Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the government’s dedication to providing services and tackling citizen concerns.
“We don’t want you, our people, to lose hope. Government is working in a very focused manner to address the issue of education and health. We are focusing on various industries, industries that are important for your progress like mining and renewable energy,” he said, according to SA News.
He added: “Those are some of the key industries that we are focusing on. We are also focusing on spreading the skills base. That is why training is going to happen here… The public employment programme is going to create more job opportunities.
“With that, we should be filled with hope and confidence that in the course of time, we will be addressing some of the issues that you have raised here.”
