Massive Home Affairs shake-up: Corrupt officials kicked out!

Cape Town – Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has announced that multiple government agencies are taking decisive action against corruption in border management and immigration.

Speaking at the launch of the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum, the minister highlighted efforts by the Special Investigating Unit, the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority, and the Border Management Authority (BMA) to enforce accountability.

Schreiber said that between July 2024 and February 2025, 27 Home Affairs officials were dismissed for corruption, fraud, and other offenses, with 18 dismissals occurring in November 2024.

“Between July 2024 and February 2025, 27 officials have been dismissed from the department of home affairs for a range of offences including fraud, corruption and sexual misconduct.

“We announced 18 of these dismissals in November last year and, since then, another nine officials have been dismissed,” Schreiber said.

Additionally, Pakistani national Afran Ahmed who charged foreigners R45 000 for a South African passport was sentenced to 18 years in Gauteng.

At the BMA, 10 officials were dismissed for corruption, with 45 more cases under investigation.

“Another 45 BMA cases are at various stages in the disciplinary process and could also result in further dismissals,” the minister said.

Schreiber emphasised the need for systemic reforms to eliminate corruption.

“What we require is an approach that tackles the problem at its root by enforcing accountability for corruption and simultaneously reforming the system itself to close the loopholes and weaknesses that criminals exploit,” Schreiber said,
