Cape Town – A massive gas explosion occurred in Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD), causing significant damage to nearby roads and creating sinkholes.
Social media videos showed cars overturned along Bree Street.
The explosion took place around 17:46, possibly on underground gas lines.
Authorities urged the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency services to respond.

Several services, including ER24 and City of Johannesburg EMS, were on the scene, and initial reports indicated minor to moderate injuries.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to confirm the details.
Witnesses reported a 10-meter-wide trench and a smell of gas in the air.

Taxis were among the affected vehicles, and the extent of injuries is still unclear.
Bree Street is one of the busiest streets in Johannesburg’s CBD during peak hours.
